Braves vs Cubs Preview Analysis
Atlanta was able to put another game between itself and Philadelphia this weekend by taking 2-of-3 and now holds a 5-game lead in the NL East race. Should the standings remain, the Braves would play the Padres in the Wild Card round but San Diego is just 1.5-games back of Chicago and Philly which could land on a Braves vs Cubs Wild Card series.
Chicago has been playing nearly .500 baseball in the second half of baseball and that is fully on display with a 5-5 record over its last 10. But for starting pitcher David Peterson, it has been a rough go of late, with the Cubbies losing each of his last four starts in which he’s given up 11 runs over 19 innings. On the season, the lefty is 7-8 with a 5.28 ERA and has a 1.58 WHIP.
He will have to be especially careful around Kyle Farmer and Matt Olson as the former has three hits on seven at-bats against Peterson while Olson has four home runs and 12 RBI over 24 at-bats – Olson’s best odds to hit a home run tonight are +429 at NoVig.
The Braves have faced tough competition early in September, winning four of seven against Philadelphia while dropping two of three against Tampa Bay. Despite this, they remain atop the NL East and have an easy path to end the month.
One of those losses to Tampa Bay came with Reynaldo Lopez on the mound in his worst outing of 2026. The 32-year-old was tagged for six runs on seven hits over 4.2 innings in a 7-2 loss. He’s been effective against active Cubs in his career, though, with their team combining for nine hits on 41 at-bats for a .220 batting average with Alex Bregman especially having difficulties going just 2-for-13 – his UNDER 0.5 hits has +185 odds at Fanatics.
For me, I like the OVER 9.5 in today’s game with -104 odds at NoVig. Both starters have above 1.00 WHIP’s and over 4.10 ERA’s, in the 5’s for Peterson. Both teams have seen a pile of runs on the board recently as well with Braves games averaging 10.2 runs over their last five games and 9.8 in the Cubs’ last five.
