All of a sudden the Spurs aren’t just one of the NBA’s most exciting young teams, they’re the reigning Western Conference champions, and now the betting favorites to win it all.

Everything Spurs basketball revolves around Victor Wembanyama. The French superstar is the most disruptive defensive player in the NBA, with the length to erase shots around the rim, and the mobility to hold his own away from the basket. He’ll need to show growth offensively, but when he’s on there are few answers for the 7-foot-4 alien.

San Antonio has kept most of their core together, while adding veteran Tobias Harris in the offseason. While he’s not a flashy addition, Harris gives the Spurs another reliable scorer and experienced playoff performer.

As such, the market is no longer sleeper on Mitch Johnson’s squad. Our fair odds have the Spurs at +339 odds, almost in line with the best available +337 price at Polymarket. So the Spurs are deserving favorites, but there’s no real betting edge.

    Best +EV NBA Championship Opportunities

The Spurs and Thunder sit atop the NBA Championship odds, but the biggest opportunities are found further down the board.

    Minnesota Timberwolves +143.7% EV

My favorite +EV betting opportunity among realistic contenders sits with the Minnesota Timberwolves who own a massive +143.7% EV opportunity. Our fair odds have the T-Wolves at +1172, while Bally Bet offers +3000 odds.

The Timberwolves underwent a serious makeover in the offseason, jettisoning Julius Randle and Naz Reid, while adding LaMelo Ball, Josh Green and Jonathan Kuminga. Minnesota is now well equipped to play a modern, aggressive, uptempo style around Anthony Edwards.

Edwards is one of the best players in basketball, and the Timberwolves have added another elite creator in Ball beside him. Ball’s size, vision and transition passing will make life a whole lot easier for Edwards, while also giving Minnesota another playmaker to run the offense when their superstar sits.

It may take some time for this new look roster to gel, but that’s why we’re getting 30-to-1 odds. I’m willing to bet on Edwards taking the next step at that price.

    Los Angeles Lakers +67.2% EV

There may not be a more fascinating team entering this season than the Los Angeles Lakers. Lebron James is gone, and now LA unquestionably belongs to Luka Doncic. Doncic led the Lakers to 53 wins last season while winning the scoring title and earning First Team All-NBA honors.

JJ Redick’s team re-signed Austin Reaves and added Walker Kessler, Collin Sexton and Quentin Grimes to the rotation. Kessler gives the team a 7’2” rim protector who’s a natural pick and roll partner for Luka. Plus, the Lakers are now younger, and better equipped to address the weaknesses around Doncic.

Reaves is coming off a career season, averaging 23.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.5 assists. The advanced stats show LA was immeasurably better with Luka and Reaves on the court, and without James, outscoring opponents by 10.1 per 100 possessions. That gives credence to this wager. If the Lakers can build on those minutes and Redick unlocks the right formula, LA will go on a deep playoff run.

There are real concerns, including a loaded Western Conference field. But, that’s why we’re getting +4500 odds at BetOnline. Our fair odds list the Lakers at +2651, creating the +67.2% betting opportunity.

Remember, Luka has already dragged undermanned rosters deep into the postseason. If Kessler stays healthy and transforms their defense, with Reaves continuing to develop, LA at 45-to-1 is a bargain.
